Near hated L.
Visions of Mello over the years flashed through his eyes. Constantly repeated "I hate you"s. Subtle outstretches of his leg that were obviously meant for him. An open hand only inches from his face. The back of a blonde head as it slowly walked through the Wammy's House door.
All these things were his memories of Mello, the only ones he'll ever have.
Maybe if L wasn't there he wouldn't have to hear "I hate you."
Maybe he wouldn't trip over outstretched legs.
Maybe that would be a comforting hand, instead of a violent one.
And maybe, just maybe, that blonde head would be coming to him, instead of leaving.
Those "maybe"s, those possibilities, were enough to make him resent L from the very bottom his heart.
