The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. It's a fun series of sometimes lewd stories written in the 1300s and contains one of the few first-hand accounts of what it was like to live in Italy during the Plague.
The Stories of Eva Luna by Isabelle Allende. If you like magical realism, you'll like this. It's also like Arabian Nights in that a storyteller tells her lover a series of short stories, and they're all great but "If You Touched My Heart" is my favorite. It's so dark and terrible!
There's also good collections of Ray Bradbury and Richard Matheson short stories which I usually enjoy. And you can't go wrong with short stories by O'Henry, although some people would argue about that I guess. Hope you find yourself something good!
