I love Christmas. It's the family time, the lights and trees, the cookies and anticipation, and the Christmas songs. The whole deal!
I get frustrated with people griping about commercialism, while they put hundreds of dollars on their credit cards. If you don't like it, don't do it! I ignore the commercialism, for the most part, though I have enjoyed getting my boys something extra special some years. I've had great success at ignoring it, and like to encourage others to as well.
What is absolutely necessary to make it a good Christmas for you? We do so much that is unecessary, perhaps you can pare down? Make a list of the necessary, and stick to it. I bet no one would notice anything missing, because you'll be together and that's all that will really matter. Our Christmas dinner is a lasagne that I can make ahead and freeze, so Christmas day is much more relaxing.
If you have time, making most of the gifts helps too. It helps with Christmas spirit, and with keeping commercialism at bay.
Christmas is about sitting in a warm place with family and friends. I like to hunker around the fire and listen to Christmas Music, I love turning off all the lights and staring at the christmas tree. I love to give gifts when it's the perfect gift for that person. Even if it's silly or cheap...especially if it's silly or cheap. Also, a walk in the snow (if there is any) on Christmas day, before the turkey dinner.
