That "grass-roots" thing sounds like a vague reference to stuff having to do with folklore... there are plenty of folkloristic studies out there on folksongs in the labor movements and such if you want me to pass you a few references.
Heh, why not? It would make a lot of sense given that social historians from the period I'm writing about have to focus on folklore and local accounts/fictions in order to gain any sense of an 'average citizen' outside of recorded rebellions and lawsuits.
Ack, I got busy and forgot to give you some references. Look up anything by Archie Green, he's huge in laborlore scholarship. A really good anthology is Working Americans: Contemporary Approaches to Occupational Folklife, edited by Robert Byington. It's got an industrial lore biblio by Green, and the rest of the bibliographical references are really helpful.
Anyway, if this is too late, I apologize, but it's interesting stuff anyway, in my opinion. :)
