Yay Grover Cleveland. I'm glad you got elected in 2 non-consecutive terms.

The Veto--once, not just an American Myth. That is, once upon a time, brave presidents like Grover Cleveland were willing to veto popular spending bills because they were not authorized by the Constitution. Townhall.com's Walter A. Williams thinks this is an important lesson to remember, and we are inclined to agree, given that the famous story ( Read more... )

Now, though, people seem to have the idea that the federal government has the power to do everything, and that it has some sort of obligation to be "compassionate" any time anything bad happens in the country. I read in Forbes that after the Northridge earthquake, the government ended up assuming 100% of uninsured property losses. If the assumption that the government is going to bail everyone out anytime there's an act of God doesn't create a moral hazard, I don't know what does ( ... )

Thinking that charity can be a government venture is a contradiction in terms. Charity can only exist where the contributions are voluntary (for a Biblical reference, see the Parable of the Widow's Mites in Matthew), and that's the only time it has any moral significance. "Government charity" is just a euphemism for wealth redistribution, as the contributions are coerced (i.e., if you don't pay your taxes to support welfare, FEMA, and other "charitable" government endeavors, men with guns will come and throw you in jail).

Or, as the classic anti-statist formulation correctly puts it, "Compassion ends at gunpoint."

Not women? This is all clearly an effect of the white male patriarchy! See, if we had a matriarchy, there would be no male-induced violence in our society to worry about. Even the Bible you purportedly quote is misogynist and chauvinist!
