I mirror pretty much everything you say here about wanting better for him in the next life. No one deserves even a third of the things that he went through. He got so much crap for just wanting to recapture a childhood that was taken from him and being eccentric. I myself don't ever plan on growing up and am a little weird, so I could empathize with him to a certain degree. Because of that, I always felt sad when the media would pervert things that didn't need to be perverted just to get a story.
Either way, I am very much of the same mind as you on the subject. Though I was never a full-fledged fan, I was always captivated every time I heard any of his music. I remember being at Best Buy with Amie and Joel and seeing one of his concerts on one of the big screens. It was so hard to turn away. He was such an amazing talent and the world will be severely lacking with the loss of such a great showman.
