No School? Snow Problem!

Jan 17, 2008 12:53

Hey all... It snowed here. Kind of a lot, I mean, for SC anyway... A couple few inches, and it's hovering right around 32 outside, so it's sort of freezing raining on top of the snow, and the snow isn't quite melting, it's more turning to icy snow-- great for packing. Of course EVERYTHING is closed, but we've got our milk and made some bread, so ( Read more... )

Ah "My Papa's Waltz." I've encountered that problem twice for classes, and once I taught it. The first time I read it, I thought it was an innocent kind of thing. The second time, everyone thought it was about child abuse. When I taught it, they all thought it was about child abuse. Not one person mentioned or thought it was plausible that it was anything but. I even made sure not to give them any clues, either, and gave them one line of the poem at a time.

What do most of your students think?

Most go for child abuse, a few for innocent fun, then as a class we go through the poem providing evidence for each interpretation... Some people change their minds, but the point is to show that poems CAN have multiple meanings--reader response theory stuff (since so many HS English teachers like to destroy that idea and instill a hatred of poetry in students... Not you of course :)

Yeah for snow days! I am hoping that Matt gets a snow day before the winter is over. They are such a fun surprise. We had one snow day in Tucson last winter and it was awesome even though I was supposed to go in for half the day to work. Cute pictures....snow cat?

It's great here too, because like in Tuscon (probably), there really isn't any "guessing"-- will it be a snow day? If there's snow, it's a snow day...

snow cat... snow dog... whatever. :) (We were going for dog-- note the tongue hanging out)...

oh, I missed the tongue. I guessed cat 'cause Penny mentioned her cat a lot, but it looks like a dog...definitely.

Miranda misses Penny a lot and was happy to see some pictures of her.

I may be making an emergency trip up to Greenville in the next couple of weeks. It may actually be Monday night. If so, can the kids and I crash for a night?

Oh, man. Totally crash. That's be fun! Penny has.... BUNK BEDS! I hope Miranda will like the idea of sleeping on the top, 'cause P's totally into the bottom bunk. Bunk beds are endless fun for children. They're my new favorite toy. We've even got a pulley to install for hoisting from below to top.

Let us know details.
