Pretty much when we grow up we become more practical, I think, and doing useless fun stuff does become pointless and feels like a waste of time.
But if it helps to invigorate your soul, you know, not everything has to be useful all the time.

I can kind of relate to the bit about being less inspired. I think what happened to me was that as I grew older/gained more knowledge I was also taught to try and put everything in the frame-work of how significant something is. Like is this something worth funding? Can you directly improve lives with this? What are the applications. And to be honest, while I ALWAYS and FOREVER will value basic science research for the sake of cool science stuff, I think somehow the "significance" part of stuff got beaten into my brain. With that said, my fiance works for a tech company doing AI and robotics and like every now and then they make something cool just for shits and giggles and I am so jealous of the joy he feels while doing stuff like that. Does that make any sense at all?
