Oooh, very clever. I like the way you deal with the idea of memory changing with the changing timelines. That's one of those things in DW/TW that doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny: the idea that the tineist change makes the universe blow up. They change timelines all the time on DW. Anyway, I like your take on it causing a kind of mental short circuit.
I also like Gwen in this story and how she both comforts Jack and reads him the riot act. I've got a Ianto-out-of-time story in my head where Jack copes with his fear by bad-mouthing Ianto at one point, and Gwen lets him have it. She says, "He's my friend too, and I won't let anyone speak ill of him, especially you!" Ah, there are too many Gwen-bashing fics out there. The way you handle her is balm to my soul.
Thank you very much. I just figured that the brain would have to deal with two dueling memories and until everything settled into place it would freak out a bit. I always thought that if anyone remembered 'That Year' they would probably short circuit as well.
As for Gwen, I like her. I know she is flawed and she hasn't always been the height of morality but her heart is good. Too many people bash her because Jack lets her get away with so much but, in the end, he let them all slide with their various betrayals (hell, Owen was basically using a date rape drug in the form of that alien spray in the very first episode but no one points that out they just say poor dead Owen missing his lost Katie/Dianne).
You know, I was just thinking last night (Yes, I think about Torchwood way too much) that all the Gwen-bashers talk about how flawed she is, but you know who is really, deeply flawed? Jack! Talk about immoral, cruel, sexual harassment, sheer incompetence and mismanagement - Jack's got it in spades. I didn't really decide I liked him until the second season. How people come down so hard on Gwen, but they forgive Jack for all of his humongous flaws - that's why I think it comes down to misogyny. She's the rival for some viewer's love interest in Jack and/or Ianto.
