I love the novels and Twilight Streets is definitely one of my favourites. In my mind, they are canon. I loved the way Ianto reacted to Idris Hopper in the book and I always felt such sadness when Greg's 'light' image appeared before them. Llinos, though very nonexistant in the book, seemed like a fiery redhead in my mind and I liked portraying her as a kind of Jane Russell in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes without the singing and dancing and being Welsh.
I believe Jack and Ianto, even if they had an eternity together, would still be very ignorant of the other's lives. They live in the moment with one another and everything else is trivial that they just don't think to elaborate.
