aka 'Tristan and Isolt' - It's a medieval legend that propelled itself through quite a few different authors: Gottfried von Strassburg, Eilhart von Oberge, Sir Walter Scott, etc etc... Wagner was waaay down the line, but he was inspired by Stassburg's retelling. I'm reading Béroul's version. Anyway, to sum up: Not sure where it originated.
