One new 52 comic and one pre-reboot comic. The pre-reboot one is so old it came right after Crisis on Infinite Earths. I pretty much switched back and forth between these, reading several issues of one and then switched to the other one. I also liked both of them, in different ways.
Pretty sure this was the best option for diving into the reboot... Yes, I am making bad jokes... ;p
Okay, really though, because I'm not terribly familiar with Aquaman it was a perfect place to start. And the first storyline was amazing, Arthur just continually having to hear jokes about him and people mocking him, and then he just proves that he's awesome and kick ass. It was great.
Also he and Mera are amazing together. I just squee loudly over them all the time and they make me smile. They love each other so much! :D
Also, I really like the Others, and I enjoyed the annual with them. So much so in fact that I have downloaded the Aquaman and the Others book as well. Will get around to start reading that eventually.
Seriously I've enjoyed this book so much so far. The only complaint I have is the Throne of Atlantis crossover which only succeeded in making me dislike every single member of the Justice League (possibly with the exception of Cyborg, he was a little bit less frustrating). They were all acting like idiots. Also the plot required a conflict between Arthur and his half brother, except there never was a conflict so now there's a manufactured conflict that's completely pointless.
I liked most of what followed (except for the whole villains month thing. Why would I want to read a whole issue from Black Manta's perspective? I skimmed it. I also skimmed the Ocean Master thing, which... Why even name it that when he doesn't even want to be called that? What are you even... *sigh* never mind).
Issue 25 had a really great ending with Arthur and Mera being happy together and they love each other so much. Also have I mentioned how Mera is badass and amazing and perfect and I love her so much! She is my favorite.
Unfortunately there was also an epilogue/prologue at the end of #25 that ended with "to be concluded in the epic Justice League story event Rise of the Seven Seas" my spontaneous reaction to that is "fuck no I refuse to endure another fucking crossover with the Justice League of annoying fuckers"
Which means I'll be taking a minor break from Aquaman and trying to read something else.
This is the weirdest comic book I've ever read. No, wait. This is the weirdest piece of any media that I've ever consumed. It was also really awesome, but yes, extremely weird.
Buddy's increasing self awareness that he is in fact in a story (a "bad story" he calls it on several occasions) until he finally gets confirmation of it. The last issue is awesome. I loved it. All the meta stuff and ignoring the fourth wall eventually just coming to a head in the last issue. Fabulous. Also the fact that the whole run is just commentary on the recently finished crisis.
Buddy being an animal rights activist and a vegetarian was really great actually, and the animal rights activist part made it not a ordinary superhero book. But also the acknowledging that the next writer may change any one of those aspects.
I love Buddy's family. and you know what, I fucking loved the happy ending without an explanation. Sometimes you just want a happy ending and you don't have to justify it by explaining how it came to be. Also it fit with how the rest of the run had been written, more or less.
The idea of a comic book limbo is of course awesome. Also the idea that every time you re-read a comic that character lives again. So I'm going to be re-reading all the flash with Wally. ;p
Anyway, I really enjoyed it actually. Especially all the meta stuff. I now have the 2009 mini series and then the new 52 animal man to look forward to.
Next I'm going to read the rebooted JLI and it's leaning towards Green Arrow for preboot. Connor Hawke is so pretty.
