I started reading the rebot JLI then had to take a break after three issues, I'll explain why later, so I decided to read Connor Hawke's run as Green Arrow. There were a lot of crossovers with Green Lantern so I skipped those since I'll be reading GL later.
Connor's first appearance was when Ollie was still alive, so they got to spend some time together. This meant that I got to read a bunch of issues with the two of them. Including one where Ollie ran into Hal Jordan. Which confused me because this was after Zero Hour and Ollie killed Hal during that event. I quite enjoyed that one.
Yeah, sometimes I don't have the most favorable opinion on Ollie, and I am definitely not a fan of Hal. It would seem however that because I am a fan of friendships that overrides any other feelings I might have. So I quite liked having a follow up to Ollie having to kill his friend because said friend became a mad godlike being hell bent on re-writing the world to suit his will.
And then Ollie died. Seriously plane crash? That is so not how I expected him to go out. I had been spoiled about how exactly before I read it (it was actually a rather late spoiler as well, no idea how I missed it), but the exact details I was unfamiliar with. Like the fact that Superman showed up.
Speaking of Superman, he was a bit of a mess during the 90's wasn't he? I actually said that at one point, that he's a mess. Because he has more than one guest appearance. First time when Ollie died, and I started laughing because I had forgotten just how ridiculous he looked when he had long hair. So ridiculous. It took away a bit from the drama of Ollie sacrificing his life.
Later on supes also showed up as 'red superman' I also remember him being blue at one point. Why? Just... Why? Anyway, he showed up in the last issue as well and looked normal.
I also had like two occasions of having to say "what the hell are you wearing?" First up Arsenal, his outfit in the 90's is terrible. Just awful. He must have not shown up in anything else I had read because I had no memory of that. Seriously Roy, what the hell man?
There was also a blue Deathstroke. Deathstroke was wearing a blue costume. Why? Who knows.
Anyway, so Oliver Queen died. A few heroes gathered in the backroom of a bar, Batman was not present... I just... Anyway, it's still better than what Booster got.
Let's talk about Oliver Queen's son Connor Hawke.
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! I WANT TO SPEND ALL MY TIME FOREVER AND EVER WITH HIM I NEVER WANT HIM TO LEAVE! I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT HIM. HE IS PERFECTION.
So yeah, that says it all doesn't it? ;p
Okay, so this innocent, pretty (drop dead gorgeous to be fair), adorable boy is like the best thing that could ever happen to a comic book. He's delightful and lovely.
I would have gladly read a hundred issues with this boy and how he learned to navigated the world outside the monastery he grew up in. And how every woman who met him instantly started hitting on him, and all I can say is "yeah, same" because seriously he's gorgeous and amazing.
I also liked all the supporting characters, there weren't a lot of them, but those who were there I enjoyed.
It was a really enjoyable read. I'm sad it ended so soon. Pretty sure I had more to say but that I can't remember any of it right now.
Oh, right. The Monkey Fist storyline or whatever it is called. Am I gonna scroll up and check? No. The crossover with the bat books. And also an earlier guest appearance by Robin basically made me super happy because it was tiny, dorky, happy, smiling Tim! My baby! Before all the crap happened to him. I wanted to give him a hug. Or have Connor give him a hug. That would work too. Also I really liked that crossover, the Brotherhood of Monkey Fists crossover. It had Connor establishing himself as the second best martial artist in the DC universe. That was really brilliant.
So yeah, I liked Connor. I liked the stories that were told. I find it amusing that it teased Ollie's return in the last issue and then it took four years or so before it actually happened. Anyway.
Ah... Reboot JLI. First off the actual real reason I had to take a break after only three issues was because the torrent I had used was perhaps not the best because the scans had all the pages in the wrong order. But I also took a break because in the first issue there's a panel of Booster claiming that he doesn't know anyone on the team, and that was just so sad.
I haven't read the original JLI run yet, but I have read a few things where they reform in different combinations during the 2000's, Generation Lost in particular. And you really get the sense that this is a team that while they may not agree on everything, they have a history between them. You don't need to have read any of it to appreciate that, and so for that to be completely erased. I... It makes me really sad.
I managed to get past it, more or less and read the whole short run, and it's actually a really enjoyable run. It's far too short yes. Also I did not care for the annual. Except for the bit where Booster saw Superman and Wonder Woman kissing and said "What the hell?" before he faded away. I would have done the same thing... I really wanted to fade away. I did not want to see that.
Anyway. It's a really enjoyable comic book, once you sort of accept that all the DC history has been erased.
Of course Booster being a leader makes very little sense without the character development. Except he apparently still got the character development because that was definitely closer to Booster in his own second series than any glimpse I've gotten of him from earlier stuff. ... I just don't know. It's confusing and weird. I really wanted more exploration of his leadership though, I really enjoyed that. Okay, I'm pretty sure that anytime Jurgens gets to write Booster I'm going to enjoy it.
I'm still mad that this isn't a continuation of Generation Lost. But it was still enjoyable and I'm sad it didn't last longer.
So, that's it for today. To sum it up: I liked both of these. I love Connor Hawke. I think JLI should have gone on longer.
Technically I could add another thing I finished reading today, but then the subject line would no longer work. So teaser instead, next post will include my thoughts on The Last Days of Animal Man (O_o), Earth 2 (Jay is so pretty) and Justice League 3000 (Barry has died twice, I like that).
