I know, I know... but I want to shred a lot of it, plus I try to recycle the paper, which means I have to OPEN all those envelopes and throw away the ones with plastic windows separately from the ones that are just paper, and and and - all my good intentions are hindering me!
I would call it mostly artistic/bookish clutter and yes the Xmas tree and sparkly lights make it less squalid. Lovely art work on the wall. Is there a matching cushion on the sofa?
Separate the recyclable from the non-recyclable envelopes and don't even open the ones that are paper envelopes and put in the paper recycling bin as soon as you get home, rather than let them accumulate. If they are not addressed to you personally I would have thought the shredding bit is redundant.
As for the books - which ones do you absolutely need to have out and at hand? All the others - back to the bookshelf and well if you are working at making art/craft stuff, I don't see any reason to pack those away at all, unless you intend to entertain for the season. Though I would take some of the stuff off the floor if you can. I wouldn't want you to trip over it, after drinking too much Christmas cheer!
Oh Killick is not available, he is grousing in the main cabin trying to corral Stephen's wombat to prevent him from eating the Christmas decorations.
Most of the "floor books" have never had a home on a bookshelf in this house. What I need to do is rearrange all my bookshelves to make room for them. Arg! And some of them were living on the chest where the tree is now, and moved to the floor so I could put up the "Scat Mat" which prevents the cats from eating the tree. The way I handle mail is thusly. It all goes to the kitchen, where I have a bill-box, a recycle bin, and a shredder. I can stand in one place and sort into bill-box and bin, then I have a pile for the shredder. When the shredder pile gets annoying, I shred it.
Your books: not enough bookshelf space? Or not enough putting books back? Because the first one is easily solved.
PS: I spy with my little eye, something that begins with "Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death"! Also "South" and beneath it, judging from color and size, "Endurance". Possibly also "In the Heart of the Sea" and "A Prince of Our Disorder". :-)
Not enough bookshelf space at the moment, but I think I can rearrange things. I do have some shelves in the laundry room, of all places, so I'll have to move some stuff there. Most of those books are ones that have never had shelf space because they're newish or have always been in transit.
I used to have a mail plan like that. Sigh, I keep meaning to sew a handy mail-sorter wall pocket thing with pretty fabric, and that will make mail sorting NICE. I used to have a basket for mail, but I never thought of having THREE baskets!!! (They could be like Shackleton's "mad," "hopeless" and "possible" baskets!)
Heehee, it is the Nutshell Studies! And South! And Endurance! And Prince! Not Heart of the Sea, though, because a friend is still semi-perpetually borrowing it, but that's probably The Bounty that you spy.
And on top of the floor pile is 1066 And All That (but with a different cover than that pictured at amazon.) Have you read it??? If not, you MUST because it's HILARIOUS!

I cannot stand cat hair, which is a shame since I have two very hairy cats. I wish I could teach them how to work a dustbuster. ;p
