Anyone have a particular position on ex-boyfriend stuff? About a year ago my friend convinced me that if I wanted to meet someone to share my life with, I had to make room for them and that started me on a clean out binge. I got rid of half my shoes and emptied half my closet so someone else could have room to move in. Around the same time, someone ( Read more... )

I think my ex-boyfriend position is different from most. I generally stay good friends with my exes; one of them just moved into my house (yeah, that's right). I have a necklace, a pair of earrings, several books, letters, clothing, and music that they have given me... and that's just what I can think of in 30 seconds. At times I have purged these things, but most of it I keep as long as it's stuff I actually like. My last boyfriend, however, I gave him back everything of his and anything he gave me, other than one book. I don't foresee ever being friends with him, and seeing those reminders just brought back anger ( ... )

Well, I would keep the earrings. But mostly because they are a pretty classic staple, and don't seem to have any terrible associations. Up to you, of course!

Do as you like but I would keep the jewelry. This comes from a woman who has every old love letter she ever received, tee shirts, stuffed animals, etc I ever got from an ex. Over the years I did some purging BUT the stuff I purged I gave to my kids. So now my daughters have stuff that they point at and say, "Yeah Mom got that from so and so, this old BF she had back in '88." It makes me human and reminds them that yes, I was once young and romantic. They're gonna have a field day with the love letters when I die. :P ( ... )

Speaking as a boy, I offer you this. You have likely spent more effort deciding whether to get rid of the gifts than was spent on picking them out.

If you look at a once-upon-a-time gift and remember That Person before all the other memories you have taken on while using the item, then it's still a gift from That Person. It has taken on no independent place in your life and it's time for them to go.

Of course, I'm also the kind of person that saves everything and uses friends to help me move. So take it as you will.
