They referred to "the crusade against genocide" (italics mine). Cringe.

I think there's just a phonetic appeal to that word that makes it really tempting to use, even though 99% of the time it's totally inappropriate.

Of course, referring to domestic policy initiatives as "wars" is also totally inappropriate, and I can't figure out the appeal of that one. Maybe people are dumb, simply?
