meaning and self definitionmattatatMay 14 2007, 18:08:37 UTC
I think you're post here is overly harsh on the way we worship the meaning of the individual. It doesn't just mean egotist, it means respect for every single individual. So self-definition doesn't just matter to one person, it is a general way of conceptualizing people/society from which we draw "sacred" human rights. Individualism hasn't always been the rule, fascists put the state/people first, which gave them carte blanche to kill people to solve social problems. USSR put the revolution first, which let them make 5-year plans that killed millions

I didn't mean to cast aspersions on the worth of the human unit, merely the concept of identity. Neither am I seeking to promote the collective over the individual.
What I meant to get at was that the concept of the human identity, consciousness, soul etc. is arrogant because it is a de facto statement of uniqueness and control. When faced with the possibility that consciousness can be created artificially, and the soul reduced to digits, the main question is "What is a human?"
