Running my demo at GenCon brought to mind many of the things I've learned as a frequent player and occasional GM of one-shot convention games. I figured it would be helpful for me to write them down for future reference, and that others may also find them useful ( Read more... )

Thanks, and I just might, if for no other reason to maybe improve the quality of games in which I end up at cons.

(In truth, I've been in way more good games than bad, though. I learned valuable lessons from both kinds.)

Excellent post. Could you link or explain "Illusionism" and "Realism" in a gaming context?

Well, I only put "realism" in quotes because it's a bit silly to call most RPGs "realistic" - what I'm actually getting at is more like verisimilitude and the sense that the game world is not (merely) a funhouse that's been set up for the amusement of the PCs ( ... )
