The Droid I was looking for.

So, after a lot of research and waiting to see if any major flaws have been discovered, I decided to get a Droid today. It's pretty rad, everything runs fast and smooth and the screen is as nice as I've read. So far, I've installed Pandora, Shazam, a timer, and a stopwatch (I can't tell you how many times I've wanted a timer and/or a stopwatch on ( Read more... )

Let me know how it works out! (Especially with alumni blitz, assuming you even use it.)

I will! Also, I do use alumni blitz as one of my main e-mail accounts, and I've been using it through Thunderbird for almost 2 years. So Alumni Blitz definitely supports IMAP, although I'm not sure what new problems I'll encounter when I try to use a Droid client.

I've been thinking about getting a new phone with Verizon (currently I'm with Alltel, which now exists in my state and one or two others). While browsing at the Verizon store, I saw the Droid and thought it looked pretty nifty.

It is pretty great. Today was my first day out of the house with it and it was very handy.

It does have some limitations (no true hands-free dialing - though supposedly that's a software issue, which means it can be overcome, no iTunes, can't talk and do another task that requires the network at the same time) compared to, say, the iPhone. On the other hand, it can multi-task and it has a flash on the camera and it supports memory cards. Then there's the CDMA vs. GSM thing.

My circumstances mean I'm well-served by Verizon, but even so, I did a lot of research before deciding to go ahead. Since you are looking to ditch your carrier anyway, and thus have more options, I'd recommend doing plenty of research to make sure whatever you choose will meet your needs. But I think any modern smartphone will make you very happy unless it's missing some particular feature on which you rely.

Well, my circumstances are the only reason I didn't become a Verizon customer when they bought Alltel is Alltel had to remain an independent in my state so Verizon wouldn't have a monopoly. So, if I want to switch carriers, it's going to be Verizon. But, I will do research into whether I would use all the options the Droid has.

Or, more to the point, that you don't really need/want the options it doesn't have.

Hey, you're allergic to latex? Did that ever cause issues with drama costuming? (For some reason I'm convinced you must have had to wear a bald cap or wig or a fake nose or something at some point.)

I'm allergic to nickel. I have to wear a tank top or shirt under everything, tucked in, so I don't get a rash on my stomach from the button on my jeans. (Neat little fact about me, there.)

1) The allergy didn't kick in until 2001.
2) I don't think I had much (if any) latex-based costuming.

So it wasn't an issue.

Do, well, nickels cause a problem for you? Or is the nickel content too low/the contact too brief? (These days I am able to handle brief incidental contact with latex.)
