It's 3:14 in the morning, and I have work and class tomorrow.  Ah well, nothing like a bit of contemplative evaluation before I sleep.

And since I study English now and not a century ago, I must describe texts, not books.  Texts are open, books are closed.  There are other distinctions.  Barthes wrote explicitly of the dichotomy.  He wrote

How the hell did you get through HS without the Oddessy? I loved it, it was better than the Iliad (or so I thought at the time, my current dream is to pick up classical Greek so I can read them in the original). And A&C is one of the few Shakespeare plays I picked up on my own; when mom and I were going through Greek plays each night (Medea is all kinds of fun, let me tell you) we picked that one up too, just for fun. (Also I think she wanted me to read it before seeing the Elizabeth Taylor movie.) Yeah, one of the most fun.
