“You shot before?” asks one of Sam’s friends as they drive to the paintball range.
“Nah,” replies Sam. It’s not a lie-he’s never shot paintballs.
“Aw, man, it’s awesome.”
The range assigns them blue, their opponents red. “Cover me,” says his friend, ducking and weaving entirely incorrectly.
Sam smiles and raises the paintball gun.
By the end, his opponents are covered with blue splotches, his teammates in red.
Sam? Well, Sam doesn’t get a drop on him.
His friends gaping, he shyly suggests, “Beginner’s luck. It’ll run out.”
His streaks in pool, darts, poker, even the Saturday crossword, say different.
