ExpectationsNo one expected them to last the night. She’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf, and he would transform, and he would surely kill her. He doesn’t.
No one expected them to last the month. She’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf, and she would realize it was a one-time thing, her helping him. It isn’t.
No one expected them to last the year. She’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf, and they’re mortal enemies, and it shouldn’t work. It does.
No one expected them to last past graduation. She’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf, and it should have been just a high school fling. It wasn’t.
No one expected them to last ten years. She’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf, and sooner or later they’d see that. They don’t.
No one expected them to last a lifetime. She’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf, and things just don’t turn out like that. They do.
They spend a lifetime together, and though the outside world sees him as getting older while she stays the same, for all they’re concerned, they’re both immortal. It nears the end for him, and she tells him to break their utmost rule: she tells him to bite her. Not play-bite, not love-bite, bite. He refuses, of course, but the thought of facing forever without him is more painful to her than a few days of poison coursing through her system.
She threatens him, convinces him. Not supernaturally-which is rule number two; they are to be equals, and that means no compulsion-but because she’s Caroline Forbes, and that’s what she does.
He feels sick at the idea of sentencing her to death, but she has no such qualms. She says he gets off easy, he gets to die and not have to bear being alone. Besides, she’s already dead, technically. He’d just be setting the world back into balance.
So he does it. He’d gone through enough transformations, enough with her by his side, that he can more or less control himself while he’s a wolf. His last transformation he walks up to her on all fours, demure as a labrador retriever. She bares her neck, an odd reversal for a vampire to do, and he does it. It’s hardly more than a nip, but then, he’d done little more to Damon so long ago, and the man had come within millimeters of death.
It happens three days later. He holds her while she dies-she shows no pain, only adoration-and she slides her hand through his still-thick head of hair while he runs his fingers along her jaw, her face as perfect and young as always, the only difference being his slow death is natural and hers isn’t.
Elena finds them later that night-having been turned long ago once she decided eternity with Stefan would be worth more than one lifetime of a family without him-and isn’t surprised. Saddened, but not surprised.
No one expected them to last their lives. She was a vampire and he was a werewolf, and it was against the laws of nature.
But then, their very existences were against those laws. And, well, Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood never were ones to take the easy road.
