Mai and Ty Lee were unceremoniously thrown into a holding cell, the iron bars clanging sharply as they were quickly locked inside. No one stayed behind to guard them, their threat potential minimal.

The acrobat was already up and sitting silently against the wall when Mai realized she hadn't moved from where she had fallen. She sat up slowly, watching her friend with puzzled eyes. She'd been silent since they were arrested, which had been at least five hours earlier. She said nothing through the strip search, had silently put on her prisoner's uniform, and had stared at the ground unmoving as their fate had been delivered to them. She wouldn't even look Mai in the eyes as they were forced aboard a Fire Nation ship to be taken to a different prison.

Mai crawled over to sit near her, unsure of what else to do. A question still remained, one that she hadn't wanted to ask while there were still others around. Now was her chance, perhaps her last if they were to be separated. She had to ask now.

"Why?"

Her eyes were still on Ty Lee, focusing on every muscular movement as if any tiny one could hold the answer. The younger girl's lip quivered slightly, but she quickly took it into her own teeth and said nothing, turning her head away from her friend's gaze.

Mai's stomach burned as she remembered all the times when she silently wished Ty Lee would shut up for once. She now wished she could take it all back, as if that would make the girl speak once more. She sighed audibly, and turned in the opposite direction as well.

"I understand if you regret what you did for me," she said simply, "But thank you."

Something in the air between them broke then, a change that Mai could feel before anything happened. Soon the acrobat was at her side, slim arms gripping her waist tightly and tears soaking through the fabric of her shirt. Ty Lee buried her face deep into Mai's stomach, her sobs wracking the other girl's body as well. She had no idea what to do, a mixture of relief and confusion flooding through her, so she tentatively placed a hand on her friend's back and gripped the cloth there loosely.

They sat like that for what seemed like hours, until gradually Ty Lee's sobbing faded away. She released her grip, and it seemed as though she was going to sit back up. But instead she simply made herself comfortable with her head resting in Mai's lap, fingers idly smoothing the creases in the legs of her friend's pants. Mai couldn't bring herself to shove her savior away, and somehow didn't want to.

After a few more moments it was Ty Lee's turn to sigh, and she went stiff as she finally spoke.

"I almost lost you. I never thought she would... Not to us. I was wrong, Mai. She could have killed you. She would have, I think. I'm confused and upset, but I regret nothing."
