Rocket's favorite songs

You may recall that the Junebug at this age stayed on brand with a very strong message of MAMA DON'T SING. Rocket, however, is my little music lover. We have had to put our foot down and stand firm on ONE song every night before going to sleep.

For a long time every single night's request was "the diamond ring song" (Hush Little Baby).

This has ( Read more... )

My go-to lullaby for the kids I babysit has always been The Ballad of Erica Levine (my bedtime delivery is much more low-key than that version). Two of them listened to it before naptime several times a week for at least a year each while they were learning to talk, and another is old enough to understand and ask questions about some of the relationship dynamics involved; none of those three ever seemed to so much as entertain the notion of asking for any other song. I am still extremely pleased that they like it so much, and I hope they remember it as they get older.

Good heavens, I had forgotten all about that song. I think I will try to sing them that one as well!

I am working on a list of songs to sing to the Amazon's Tiny Overlord. "Mr. Zebra" and "Happy Phantom" are on the list, as is "Rainbow Connection" which was successful with friends' 4yo-sprog last time I babysat. Also "Oh Mother How Pretty the Moon Is Tonight" which my grandmother sang to me.

I think I have the words to "Dirty Paws" down, which should be useful for next time.

Rocket has sometimes accepted "Mr. Zebra", but never requested it. Probably just as well! That one's a bit challenging on the ol' voice!

Critter #1 loved The Lion Sleeps Tonight, which I found strange because that takes a particularly good voice and I can't sing on tune (unless extensively and protractedly coached).

Critter #2 loved The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and personalized versions of Baa Baa Black Sheep (different # bags of wool, for siblings, parents, cousins, etc.). I found it a bit strange that Critter #2 wanted me to sing because she has been able to sing on tune since birth.

Now Critter #2 doesn't want anyone else to sing, but will sing to herself. Not always quietly. We've had to put feet down about that little bit of hypocrisy.

PS: Were you aware that Why Does the Sun Shine? is a cover? The original is from the Singing Science Songs from the 1950s? See http://acme.com/jef/singing_science/ for more info. I think Space is the best album, which includes Why Does the Sun Shine.

I did not know that, good lord! TMBG does have an ear for a good cover, don't they?

One evening when the Junebug was very very small, between 6 and 12 months old I think, E and I spontaneously started doing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". I still remember the kiddo's face. His jaw literally dropped. It was as if we had started doing magic. You can DO that? You can sing two totally different things that somehow make one song??? He kept whipping his head back and forth, he couldn't decide who to look at! It was so adorable.

My 5-year-old son never really seems to have connected with "children's songs," but he's picked up huge chunks of "Hamilton."
