This is probably not the greatest place to ask, but does anyone have any advice as to whether it's a bad idea to be learning two different languages - at beginners' level - concurrently

From what I know about learning languages, two parts of your brain are engaged - the part you use to learn your first language, and the part that you use to learn a second language and all subsequent languages. Once you've learned a second language, it's a lot easier to learn a third, fourth, etc. I don't know if learning two languages at the same time would be confusing, but I think learning a sign language (nice one for that, by the way!) and Spanish would be a lot easier than learning, say, Spanish and Italian, which are quite similar and so might be quite confusing.

I learned French and Japanese in high school and had no trouble with those two.

It's all right as long as they're not two similar languages where you might get the vocabulary confused, I think.

I started learning Italian once I was intermediate at American Sign Language. Sign is so different from any language, considering the modality, that it's really not a problem. Just make sure you make equal time for practice! Signed languages are the hardest languages for English speakers to learn so practice practice and more practice! One good thing is that you can sign and talk at the same time, doesn't matter if your speaking English or Spanish. Good luck!
