double standard

You seem to be surprised there's a double standard. Well, there is...I think blaming it on religion is seeking a simple answer, though. That has alot to do with it, to be sure, but women are second class citizens (when considered human at all) in every culture, the world over, for all time.
The American method is unique. Religion? Sure...I think mostly we're just confused. In our society, women are equal on paper but not at all in reality. so people are just goofballs in how they deal with that.
