Grad school annoyance

For the last week I've been puzzled about why the ling faculty at Northwestern seem to dislike me. I spent an entire day at UChicago last week where the delightful faculty members invited me to join their classes, met with me privately, brought me to the department tea and commanded the grad students to invite me to their weekly pub night. that is deeply stupid. but talking to grad students may give more valuable information anyway. also, since app fees are not that high, i think the approach of applying everywhere and doing your visiting later in the process is common - this kind of early-stage visiting may just not be something they thought was likely.
