I dunno about retconning, (upon close examination it certainly feels possible) and frankly I could care less if it means John is actually as smart as he appears to be. Sort of.

Anyway, that's not the point of this. Two things are bothering me and I'd love to hear your opinions on it:

I'm going with Derek having killed Jesse and John finally grieving for Riley. He was in 'gotta find who killed her' mode until he finally had his catharsis with Jesse.

And I think he honestly was going to let Jesse leave. Derek made the choice to kill her on his own. I very much got a 'if I loved Wisher so much, yet I don't know you, what do you think your chances are?' vibe from Derek as he confronted her in the garage.

Would be interesting if Jesse pops up later, wouldn't it? You make good points, although I'm still unsure about Derek's accuracy.

It is something kept open on purpose, definitely.

As for his accuracy, I think it's implied that it's pretty damn good.
