…BASICS;

FULL NAME: Samael Slate
NICK: Sam, Scales, The Eater of Souls,
AGE: As old as time itself.
DATE OF BIRTH: October, the 2nd (he wants to be a Libra, so it must be October and his favorite number is the 2...)
SPECIES: Tricky question! He started as an Angel, but then met the wrong guys and, well, you know how it goes.
ALIGNMENT: chaotic.
SEXUAL PREFERENCES: mirroring Sam's alignment and his decision not to choose Heaven or Hell over the other, he is 'undecided'.
HAIRCOLOUR: A very dark brown.
EYE COLOR: Dark brown.
QUIRKS/HABITS/FLAWS: Tends to lie when bored; likes games, bets and taking high risks for no (sane) reason; loves to watch sinners or people who give into temptation easily; his dress style is eccentric (to put it mildly) and the concept of ‘hiding and not be seen by any human eye’ is completely beyond him.

…PERSONALITY;

If you ask The Book of all Books about Sam, you will discover that he is an archangel. Not one of the tough guys - the kind of angels that come with burning swords and righteousness - but an archangel nevertheless. Of course, as one would expect from someone who is old as time and always had the popularity that comes naturally with big wings and angelic features, he is not only mentioned in the Bible, but also in Talmudic and post-Talmudic lore as well as some pretty amazing demonology books (a fact he is quite proud of) and he is often described as a seducer, destroyer and asshole accuser. Not that Sam cares much about those flattering nicks.
Moreover, legends say that he is neither truly good nor evil; that Sam is a member of the heavenly host as well as a fallen angel - and as legends go there is always some truth to them.

His best quality is that he enjoys his work whole-heartedly and never complains about his many duties (which are often grim and destructive) and more often than not he will take his time and talk to the poor mortals. Sam’s greatest role in the Jewish lore is that of the ‘Angel of Death’ and Samael thinks that not only do the Jews have the fanciest name for him, they have also summed it up quite nicely…
Oh, and if you’re looking for a list of his flaws - well, sorry, but Sam is pretty damn sure that there’s nothing worth listing.

…HISTORY;

Once upon a time, when earth was still young and the Seventh Heaven was still shiny and new (today it’s only ‘shiny’ - which is exactly the problem, like a toy that gets boring after a while), Samael was one of the seven regents ruling a world served by two million angels. Being the bossman of the Fifth Heaven and residing in the upper class heaven reserved for the (al)mighty ‘Top Seven’ of Angels Sam’s fall from grace did come as some kind of surprise - even for Sam. Okay, so maybe the thing with the snake had been a bad joke, but at least the story about Sam being the father of Cain wasn’t true (he had just liked the publicity, that’s why he never openly denied it). But he had found a way to make up for it, hadn’t he? After all, it had been Sam who had held back the arm of Abraham when the old fool man was about to sacrifice his own son (although… it hadn’t been a good deed or a noble reason, not really. Sam had simply not been in the mood to do overtime that day).

Nowadays, Sam sees himself as a part-time worker juggling two jobs for two Masters. Sure, at first it had been a bit odd working for both sides, but what the heck? Honestly it isn’t that much different to the Double-Agents you can sometimes read about in the newspapers. And neither the good guys nor the bad ones are actually paying him for his work, so they better shouldn’t start complaining.

Spending so much of his time among mortals has softened him, however. You can’t talk and live and party with those fragile beings without taking a liking to them (even though he likes them the same way a scientist likes his rats), and so Sam also spends a lot of his time watching and observing them (he is a big fan of ‘evolution’).

…ETC;

According to "The Ascension of Moses" (Chapter IV - Aggadah - The Legend of The Jews - By Louis Ginzberg) Samael is also mentioned as being in 7th Heaven:

- "In the last heaven Moses saw two angels, each five hundred parasangs in height, forged out of chains of black fire and red fire, the angels Af, "Anger," and Hemah, "Wrath," whom God created at the beginning of the world, to execute His will. Moses was disquieted when he looked upon them, but Metatron embraced him, and said, "Moses, Moses, thou favorite of God, fear not, and be not terrified," and Moses became calm. There was another angel in the seventh heaven, different in appearance from all the others, and of frightful mien. His height was so great, it would have taken five hundred years to cover a distance equal to it, and from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet he was studded with glaring eyes, at the sight of which the beholder fell prostrate in awe. "This one," said Metatron, addressing Moses, "is Samael, who takes the soul away from man." "Whither goes he now?" asked Moses, and Metatron replied, "To fetch the soul of Job the pious." Thereupon Moses prayed to God in these words, "O may it be Thy will, my God and the God of my fathers, not to let me fall into the hands of this angel."
