I never regretted being the in the military.

But now every time someone wants to "thank" me or call me a "hero", I regret it more and more.

We don't call them "heroes" here in Jersey. We call them "subs."

Okay, I'm a gonna go out on a limb here…modesty is a wonderful thang and all, but personally I'd prefer folk thanked veterans (and with their taxes) rather than allowed them to live in poverty on the streets as forgotten people.
