Well, as it turns out, Michael's idea of how this works was very different from mine. Meaning: he thinks it is a state in its own right, whereas I think it is a transitional state to being married, sometime relatively soon. So... I don't see any reason for an engagement if marriage is not to follow. (By the way, I'm not talking about a wedding, either--city hall would be fine.) I guess nothing will happen after all!
