Wikipedia and Acadamia

Yet another thing that pisses me off is how so many academics/pseudoacademics are against the use Wikipedia in any shape or form.

They refuse to draw the distinction between citing Wikipedia directly (as if it were the original source)*, and using it as a tool.

I teach internet studies, so I'm an 'academic/pseudoacademic'. 'Do not cite wikipedia, but do use it as a research tool and do follow (and use the links it cites as citations if appropriate)' is pretty much exactly what I/we tell my students. So, I'd agree with the video, but think you might be wrong about widespread academic opposition to wikipedia.

Of course, as I teach people about the internet, I have to add a special caveat. My students are permitted to cite wikipedia as a source for facts *about wikipedia* (eg wikipedia policies).

Good to hear; perhaps it is my aversion towards the narrow viewpoint which exaggerates it's presence.
