I've come to the conclusion that i am socially retarded. I'll give you the back story...I lent someone a dvd at work (someone who I quite want to be friends with) and she brought it back this afternoon saying "thanks, it was brilliant"...and sort of stood there for half a second waiting for me to carry on the conversation and all I could come up

Maaaaaarc, I've been doing the same :( I keep bumping into this person I do quite like a lot (which should be a good thing!) but every time I do, I totally fuck it up and come away looking like an absolute fool/like I don't care/really rude. Don't worry, I'm sure she doesn't think you're a cunt at all... how could she? Just don't focus on it too much and hopefully it won't be a problem. That's my theory anyway :P
