A single shot rings out loud and clear splitting the air like a knife. Birds Elijah never even knew were in the treetops overhead squawk and take startled flight sending down a rain of leaves and twigs. Elijah pulls back firmly on the reins abruptly halting Tambo mid step and looks around trying to discern the direction the sound came from amongst the frantic noises. Tambo senses his uneasy concentration and stands stock still under Elijah holding his head high sensitive ears fully a mast flitting back and forth nervously.

Almost immediately after the shot a piercing neigh fills the air and shortly Elijah can hear the faint sounds of splashing up ahead then shod hooves sparking off rocks followed by the solid thudding of them against much softer earth getting steadily louder and heading directly at them. He can feel Tambo vibrating with urgent worry underneath him hooves stomping and calling out with soft panicky knickers while shaking his head and pulling at the reins. Elijah tries desperately to quiet him demanding control with his hands and feet then leaning forward whispering soothing words into Tambo’s alert ears while looking in the direction of the quickly closing hoof beats.

No matter how hard he strains his eyes to catch up with the sound of the impending collision Elijah doesn’t see the horse till it’s almost on them but he instantly recognizes it as Dillion. It’s with blind faith and instinct that Tambo steps back and around then lunges forward as the big gelding looms suddenly in the darkness. Elijah barely catches a hold of flashing mane in his hand before being pulled from his saddle to sprawl across the fleeing horses back his knees instantly digging in and pushing as he pulls himself upright one hand still clutching Tambo’s reins as the black stallion matches strides with the terrified Dillion.

Elijah doesn’t have much time to think about that gunshot as he struggles to bring Dillion under control. A joint effort Tambo presses into Dillion’s head space and his pace slows as Elijah soothes and gentles with his hand. Eventually Dillion’s mad gallop slows to a stop and Elijah breathes a sigh of relief falling forward and hugging Dillion’s neck as the horses huge ribs expand with rushed breaths between his legs. He looks around and has no idea how far Dillion has taken them and now that gunshot has him anxious to get back.

After Dillion’s breathing returns to normal Elijah digs his knees in, jabs with his heels and pulls him round guiding him somewhat by his mane and Tambo. He checks the sky and discerns the general direction they need to move and starts off. Both horses sense his anxious urgency and respond with fluttering nervousness.

He has never ridden Dillion before and the different rhythm keeps his mind slightly occupied. Still a big part of him is thinking of that gunshot and why Dillion bolted and his urgent need to get back overshadows the reason he was planning to make a sneak attack in the first place. Dillion and that gunshot can’t mean anything good quite the opposite and its Elijah’s heart betraying his mind and good sense with worry for Rhys. The gunshot really baffles him. He can’t for the life of him think of the origin of it. As far as Elijah is aware there isn’t anyone but Rhys and him out here.

Soon Elijah recognizes where they are and he knows it isn’t far. Dillion and Tambo get nervier and on edge, Dillion halting and shifting uneasily under him and Tambo throwing his head high and snorting. Elijah pulls both horses to a stop and considers whether he should proceed on foot. He has just made his decision and dismounted when both horses startle pulling strongly back as the sound of grass and twigs being crushed under a boot echo in the stillness.

Elijah almost drops Tambo’s rein when Dominic steps out from behind a tree with a six shooter raised and aimed at his head, thumb slowly pulling back the hammer, eyes full of malice and mouth set in anger. Even while his jaw drops, his bowels shriveling up with shock and fear Elijah manages to make himself speak, totally ignoring the first question burning in his mind instead his concern for Rhys winning through. “What have you done with him?!”

“Only what he deserved.” The malice Dominic spits that out with leaves Elijah’s blood running cold with fear, regret and heavy loss. Dominic waves the barrel of the gun snorting cruel laughter. “You know where to go.”
