“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting our time” - LJIdol Topic
In Case of Disaster…
Rajesh looked pityingly at his dear friend Dilip, “I’m telling you, you are completely unprepared.”
“I don’t know, Rajesh… It all seems so unlikely.”
“But do you even know! For example, do you know if you live in a potential mudslide zone?”
“Well, no, but I imagine if there was a mudslide, my house would simply slide down the hill, perhaps crushing Vann’s house on the way down.” Dilip shook his head slowly from side to side, “Poor Vann.”
“Fine, but what about tornadoes, or wildfires?”
Dilip gave Rajesh a quizzical look. “I’ve never heard of tornadoes landing around here, and it’s been raining all week!”
Exasperated, “Ugh, that’s so totally not the point! It’s about being prepared… for anything!”
“Hmm,” Dilip thought carefully, “hurricanes and earthquakes!”
“Yes! Do you know what to do in case of an earthquake?”
Dilip exclaimed, “Get under something sturdy like an oak desk or kitchen table!”
Dilip and Rajesh surveyed the room. “No, Dilip, none of this will do. This cheap furniture is all made of particle board or MDF-the kind that swells when it gets wet.”
“Aha!” Dilip raised a finger, “So in case of hurricane, keep the furniture out of the rain!”
Rajesh did not laugh. “You are hopelessly unprepared… You should at least have a hand-crank flashlight, a Sterno stove, waterproof matches, a first-aid kit, a safety whistle, and a stockpile of water and food. Do you have any of that?”
“Hmmm.”
Rajesh rolled his eyes, “Okay, come on… let’s look around the house and in the basement and see what we come up with.”
After about a two hours of scavenging, Rajesh and Dilip stood in front of the small pile of supplies they had collected and placed in the middle of the livingroom. “Well this is pathetic…” Rajesh waved his hand over the pile. It included a flashlight with dead batteries, a set of butter warmers, but no tea candles, a baggy of matches collected from various clubs, one box of Band-Aids, a bottle of Aspirin, and a pennywhistle Dilip purchased on a vacation in Cork. “Furthermore, you have no stockpile of water, and your pantry has truffle oil, cat food, pasta, microwave popcorn, and four cans of chickpeas. My God, man, how do you live?”
“Meh, I get by.”
“This is horrible… You are completely unprepared!”
“But I’m no doomsday prepper. I’m not a survivalist!”
“But you need a plan!”
Dilip raised his hands, “Fine! I have a plan!”
Rajesh smirked, “Oh really? So what’s this plan of yours?”
Dilip smiled, “In case of disaster, die early.”
