Okay, I'm very amused of Roy and Gracia talk in dirty code. XD; I'm assuming though Gracia is part of Roy's mission, sort of? If so, interesting she's undercover too.

Like the scene with Roy and Fuery telegraphing one another. I was able to tell who is communicating who without much trouble. Hm, I think it'll take a lot of convincing and then some for him to convience the Ishvalans he'll be able to handle the transmutation.

Nice development on the last part with Roy and Scar. I remember the mention of Scar's brother using transmutation and confornting the gate, but didn't expect that Scar used the Gate's gift there.

Overall, another enjoyable chapter there. Looking forward to the next one!

That's an old code... mfelizandy September 25 2011, 04:11:42 UTC
Heh--Roy and Gracia got stuck using that old code because it was the only way she knew to pass him a message without using plain speech or trusting someone else to code it. Roy and Maes made up that silly, salacious code when they were cadets, and Maes shared it with Gracia. She's not really part of Roy's mission or one of his staff, she's just someone Roy's people trusted to not ask too many questions, pass along the message, and then get out of town with her daughter while the getting's good.

I'm glad Fury and Roy came across clearly! Roy will be stretching his brain to convince the Ishvarun to trust him regarding alchemy, or anything else, for that matter. Scar will have more impact on that than he perhaps realizes--or likes.

Scar's alchemy has bugged me for a long time. He transmutes one-handed. Not even Ed can do that. Nor did Scar have any training whatsoever in alchemy before he did it the first time. It's also bugged me that he has that catastrophic scar that engulfs both of his eyes (and eyebrows, for that matter), ( ... )

Wow. Didn't expect Scar having seen the Gate. I like the explanation of why he could do alchemy. Now if only we got answers to all the other questions I have ;)

Love your Roy, the way he interacts with Scar and with his subordinates. Especially enjoyed that little exchange between Roy and Gracia and between Roy and Jean. The kind of trust Roy wishes... I'm not saying he's incapable of getting it, but it seems it would take a long time, the way things are going.

Was the board Scar gave Roy the one he was craving before?

Looking forward to next chapter :D

You have more questions? mfelizandy September 25 2011, 04:21:15 UTC
Yes, the board Scar gave Roy is the one Scar was working on before. It's not a particularly finished job, but it's enough to give Roy the forms...and help him notice some things about those arrays that will be further addressed later in the story.

Thank you for the compliment about Roy! He can be a handful--he's so brilliant that I have to think through even his little "throwaway" comments to make sure they're clever enough for him! He needs those interludes with his people back home to shore up his sanity and his resolve. He does love "his people", and for their sakes he'll drive himself until he drops. He'll figure out how to win the trust and cooperation of the Ishvarun for the people who already do trust him, paradoxically increasing the load on himself with every success.

Now if only we got answers to all the other questions I have ;)

Ooo, like what? I love worldbuilding and filling in gaps in the canon!

I think most of my questions are plot related, like what's going on in Central, what's the general opinion on Roy and Scar's relationship among the tribes, how did Scar knew who the State Alchemist were, etc. Oh, and maybe it was mentioned but I don't remember if Roy's team know about the scar on his face? I don't know why it fascinates me so much, the different reactions he'll get from everyone he knows when they see him again (see how I'm assuming he and the whole team will live? :P)

Roy's people back home don't know about the scars on his face, no. He left that out on purpose, and that decision will cause a bit of a kerfluffle later on.

Opinions of Roy and Scar's relationship--there isn't a general consensus on it as yet, but there are some people who are very unhappy that Roy is still breathing, and they'll be making their feelings known in another chapter or two. Roy's stirred up a lot of internal hornets' nests just by being who and what he is, and it's going to get worse before it gets better ( ... )

Glad to see this updated again. ^^

Gracia was a real surprise (as in: civilian and I'd expect Roy's team to make sure she stayed protected and out of state/military related matters), but nice nonetheless.

Your ideas with Scar and the Gate are intriguing as well, never quite thought of it like that before, so kudos! XD

Thanks for the kudos! Scar having seen the Gate is a pet theory of mine to explain things that the canon doesn't cover.

Gracia's radio call was sort of a stopgap. She passed along a message in a code that was more or less an inside joke, and she's on her way out of town with Elysia. It was meant to indicate that things are getting really unstable in Central, lighten up the story with some silliness in the code phrases, and turn the screws a little more on Roy, because he didn't have enough angst and stress already, don't you know. :P

Ah, I see. Yup, that makes a lot more sense, thanks for explaining the Gracia situation. ^_^ Indeed, you can never put Roy under enough pressure. ;)

If it was easy, we wouldn't need Roy! mfelizandy January 16 2012, 03:39:39 UTC
Thank you for the comment and the compliments! They're making it easier to get through a scene that's proving as difficult for me as for Roy. His blindness, the cultural and linguistic divide (which I do love building--part of the difficulty in the scene I'm working on involves my wanting to show off a cultural detail without letting it take over and ruin the scene), and the suspicion and fear don't make socializing with the locals easy ( ... )
