"I Don't THINK So!" Poll--Who are we going to lose and what are you going to AU? (Ch. 102 spoilers)

Dec 16, 2009 13:00

It's getting close to the end. Soon we'll have the last issue in our hands, and we'll know who survived and who didn't, and in what condition. I have my own opinions on who's likely to be a casualty of "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny", but I thought it'd be fun to see what the rest of the community has to say about the ending.

He -will- walk again! fractured_chaos December 16 2009, 18:23:06 UTC
We've got Dr Marco and the Xingian alchemy (which has been touted more than once primarily used for medicinal purposes). Jean Havoc will have a long road of physical therapy, but the severed spinal cord will be healed and he will eventually walk again.

Agreed.
Or perhaps Roy will remember what he set out to do if he doesn't remain blind.

Honestly, I don't want to see Ed die, but from what Truth/Al said in this chapter, I'm fearing that's exactly what's going to happen. Somehow or another, Al is not going to be able to get his body back from the Gate now, unless Ed sacrifices himself for him, and Ed will do exactly that.

We've already been set up for the deaths of the other three:
Hohenheim -- Who is ready to die, now that Trish is gone (and probably would have sooner if it weren't for that whole Save-the-World thing)...
Izumi -- Who is slowly dying as it is from her encounter with the Truth...
and Scar (without knowing his name -- there's no one he cares enough about to tell) -- who seems to be attempting suicide-by-Alchemist-or-Homunculus anyway.

So if those three go, I'll mourn their losses, but their deaths are expected and won't be as jarring or shocking as Hughes' death was.

Scar might give the Elrics his name--and ask them to carry it home to Ishbal for him. I think he cares more than he lets on. He might give Winry his name, if he lives long enough for her to catch up with them all. There would be a certain satisfying logic to that.

I thought that Scar might share his name with Winry, myself.

I have a feeling Scar will die in the epic Scar/Wrath fight that'll occur next chapter. He'll kill Wrath, then he'll die. But we won't learn his name, 'cause he's an enigma like that.

Izumi will die protecting Ed and Al if they fight against Father and Pride.

Hoenheim too, and he'll have a final speech lined up about how he's sorry he left the boys etc, etc. And Ed will forgive him. Eventually. >.

Here from fm_alchemist. I was thinking about who I think will die this afternoon, weirdly enough. I have a sort of ranking in my head:

- I am totally certain that Scar and Hohenheim are going to die (I don't want them to, but if Scar survived he'd just end up in prison, and Hohenheim does need to keep his promise to Trisha... *blub ( ... )

If Ed died Winry would kill him.
Made me laugh.

Although if Ed dies I'm probably going to cry for a month. The idea of his character has had such a huge impact on my life in a positive way... and various events.. :C

I agree with pretty much all of what you've said here! (uh, apart from the fact that I sometimes write slash, although I try to keep it as canon-friendly as slash can plausibly get ( ... )

Honestly I would really like for Ling (with or without Greed along) to go back to Xing and become Emperor, but it seems to be a fairly consistent thing that immortality is a really bad idea in the FMA-verse, and I'm not sure how he'd get around that.

I think there is some sort of law of writing that about 80-90% of research never shows up in a story in a significant way. I don't think I have a single fic for which I didn't spend about half an hour doing research for one fairly insignificant sentence.

I'm not sure even how or why Havoc would be healed either.

Aside from the fact that I'm a Havoc fangirl? XD

Actually there are a couple of things that make me think it's a possibility -- although they could just as easily be red herrings...

1 -- Dr Marco learning Xingian Alchemy (I mentioned earlier).
2 -- It's been mentioned over and over again that this alchemy is primarily used for healing.
3 -- Roy's research while they were sill in the hospital, and talking to Dr Knox.
4 -- Dr Knox was also in Ishbal, experimenting on people. He might have a few tricks up his sleeves.

None of this is compelling enough to go beyond reasonable doubt, but the idea of Havoc walking again isn't completely out of the realm of possibility, either. If it happens it wouldn't be a deus ex.

I do NOT think Arakawa will kill Ed. I think that is too dark for this series, honestly.

You make a very good point. No matter how dark and intense things have gotten in this series, there has always been that sense of hope that ran all the way through it.

ON Havoc... havocmangawip December 16 2009, 21:44:06 UTC
To the OP, Havoc CAN be written without going AU, it does however take some doing. It isn't impossible though. If you ever want to write it I'd be happy to provide you with links for information on spinal cord injury.

With the aforementioned alchemy it IS a possibility that they could fix/improve Havoc. EVEN with a fixed spinal cord he will have a lot of PT and may NEVER be the same again. His gait/strength/muscle mass and bone mass are likely compromised already. (That said, even SOME return of function would be awesome and an improvement for him.)

I'm not even thinking it's a cop out with the alchemy. They'll still have to "move heaven and earth" to fix him. If they did it "soap opera style" I'd be super pissed. I suppose that is the activist and friend in me. I know guys in similar situations to Havoc and I am pissed on their behalf when things aren't portrayed correctly.

I'm not wagering on who dies yet... I have some thoughts.
