I had a similar dilemma around white peaches. They were extraordinary ...when you could only get them for a few weeks each year. I found that the law of diminishing returns applied as the season for the white peaches expanded.

Rainier Cherries are one of the better things about living out in Seattle. Well, for the first couple weeks--by August I'm pretty tired of them.

Yellow peaches are also high on my list, though it's really difficult for me to time my eating of a peach such that it is the optimal degree of ripe.

...I think I have not provided any evidence against the "limited availability = fantastic" theory.
