I generally recommend starting by actually checking out the candidate's sites. You can generally get a pretty good idea of their priorities. You'll also see which issues they have strong opinions on, which is important, as those are the ones unlikely to change based on the perceived wishes of their constituents.

The down side to this, of course, is that you're unlikely to find much dirt. No one is going to self-report dirt. And, few candidates are going to sling mud on their own website. Your best bet there is to check out some of the major news outlets. They'll give you a pretty quick overview.

And, yeah, I haven't been inspired by a candidate in years. John Edwards was the only one to do so, and that was during his Senate campaign in NC. His Presidential campaigns haven't done much for me.

Try the Washington Post's candidate selection quiz. It takes longer than some of the others, but you're actually judging the candidates' own statements on policy issues, which I found very helpful. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/interactives/candidatequiz/
