Even though the ending was predictable to us as viewers, I think Karen Eiffel changed the ending of her novel because she felt she had become too predictable as an author. Up until this book, she killed off every single one of her main characters, so it was expected she'd do the same to Harold. Was it a better ending for her book? Probably not, but she most likely gave her fans something entirely new to talk about just by simply changing her normal format.

I agree that the movie is predictable. You can see what is going to happen throughout the entire movie.
