My niece works in a college and meets a lot of students and staff, from not only her own department but others; she has a neat trick where she will look very apologetically at someone and say 'Oh I am sorry I can't remember your full name...' At which point they will either give her it, and she says 'Thank you, I remembered it was XX, but couldn't remember your surname!' or, if they only give her their first name, or their surname, whichever they assume she has forgotten, she says 'Oh, I remembered that bit - it's the other part I've forgotten I'm afraid...'
