Hunter's Story
A Supernatural story for 1sentence
by mhalachaiswords
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam Winchester and Ellen Harvelle
Theme set: Beta
Rating: up to R for innuendo
Notes: This sort of assumes an existing relationship with my Supernatural OTP, Sam/Ellen. So warning for that one. And while this is Sam/Ellen, Dean was jealous of all the attention Sam was getting and managed to sneak into this quite a bit. 45 to 49 are sequential, while the rest are all over the map.

~~~
01 - Walking
The first time she sees him, walking into her kitchen, she can't think of why his father even thought he was anything other than dangerous.
02 - Waltz
It's like a waltz, this game he plays, to see how long he can hold out before he appears on her doorstep, seeking the warmth of her bed and the comfort of her touch.
03 - Wishes
She's wished for a lot of things in her life, but never so hard as that Sam never realizes what a mistake he's made by getting involved with her.
04 - Wonder
She wonders when he'll come to his senses -- rather, when Dean will knock some sense into Sam's head about this.
05 - Worry
She was dreading the conversation with Jo about this, right up until Jo skips the preliminaries and asks Sam, in full earshot of everyone in the bar, what his intentions with Ellen are.
06 - Whimsy
She might be old enough to be his mother, but sometimes she lets herself believe that maybe, just maybe, this thing with Sam can work.
07 - Waste
The Hunter's life is such a waste -- good men cut down too soon, dead saving a world that doesn't know what danger it's in -- at the rate Sam's going, Ellen's going to have to bury yet another good man.
08 - Whiskey and rum
He drinks beer, unless it's been a bad hunt, then he goes for the rum, while Ellen pours herself a whisky to keep him company.
09 - War
She told him they were at war, with evil and the darkness... she doesn't think Sam realizes that the war is also raging in him.
10 - Weddings
She kicked him out of her bed and didn't talk to him for a month when he asked her why she didn't wear Billy's wedding ring anymore.
11 - Birthday
He must have pulled Jo into his little plot, for on her birthday, Ellen finds a tiny wrapped package from Sam in the kitchen, even though he's in New Mexico with his brother.
12 - Blessing
He tells her stories of his Hunts; she gives him holy water and blessed objects and prays for him when he's not around.
13 - Bias
Yeah, maybe she was biased towards Sam from the start -- but Dean's a prickly smart-ass, too much like their father for her comfort.
14 - Burning
She doesn't want to know what he is thinking about when he lies back in bed and stares at the ceiling.
15 - Breathing
He hates silence between them, fills it with meaningless chatter, soft words, even measured breathing as he hold her close to him.
16 - Breaking
She hides her destructive moods from everyone, doesn't let anyone see when she breaks the glasses by the boxful to stop herself from shattering into a million screaming pieces... but she's certain Sam's not going to stop asking until he finds out how she cut her hand.
17 - Belief
It's easier to believe in the devil than in God, he tells her once -- God isn't the one who keeps taking away the women he loved.
18 - Balloon
Sam and Jo are playing balloon toss one day when Ellen comes out of the kitchen... it's the first time she's ever been jealous of her own daughter and it makes her sick to her stomach.
19 - Balcony
She shows him the ledge on top of the house where she goes to watch the stars, but she never tells him how scared she is of heights.
20 - Bane
Dean keeps rolling his eyes at the bouquet Sam picked for her, but she knows he doesn't see the real meaning -- wolfsbane, foxglove and deadly nightshade are beautiful and deadly, and it almost scares her how pleased she is by the present.
21 - Quiet
Sam's never quiet unless he's hurting inside so bad he wants to die... some days Ellen can feel the despair rolling off him in silent, black waves.
22 - Quirks
She realizes how far gone she is when Sam starts in on one of his more annoying quirks, that weird nose-crinkle he does when he's trying to hide the fact that he's lying.
23 - Question
It takes him exactly six months and five weeks after they started this disaster to ask if she slept with his father, and she still hasn't answered.
24 - Quarrel
She argues with damned near everyone, but not Sam -- part of it is that she's afraid he'll take off, but the other part is that she really, honestly doesn't know what he can do if provoked.
25 - Quitting
She supposes it was inevitable, that one day she would be the one to throw up her hands and tell him in no uncertain terms that there was no quitting this life, but he sure as hell could ditch her at a moment's notice.
26 - Jump
Ellen's sure Sam will never live it down, that the one time he borrows Dean's car to see her, the engine dies and he needs a jump to leave.
27 - Jester
It takes her a while, but she finally realize that Sam's trying to pull Dean out of his shell with jokes and laughter and just being his brother... she doesn't know if Dean's too far gone to notice.
28 - Jousting
It's like he's tilting at windmills, his obsession with fighting evil beyond all reasoning, but she can't bring herself to point out that everyone who lives by the sword, dies with that sword stabbed right through their hearts.
29 - Jewel
When Ellen gives Jo her great-grandmother's ring, the tiny diamond chip all shiny in the sunlight, Jo squeals loud enough to bring the Roadhouse down... then gets that look in her eyes and asks if Ellen's sure she's not going to be needing an engagement ring anytime soon.
30 - Just
One time, she knows Dean is watching them from the shadows behind the Roadhouse; she just can't bring herself to say anything as Sam does that thing with his tongue again.
31 - Smirk
She's not sure he can even smile normally anymore... everything's a variation on a twisted smirk, and even at the best of times, all he's been through is a shadow undercutting his joy.
32 - Sorrow
They lose people in this life all the time, and they have to deal or fall into pieces -- Sam misses his daddy like hell, Ellen can see that, but he's dealing with his sorrow, unlike Dean, who's walking the knife's edge, and Ellen doesn't know if she can help him.
33 - Stupidity
With most other Hunters, Ellen has no qualms about digging in when they fuck up -- but never with Billy, and now never with Sam.
34 - Serenade
With Dean and Jo arguing about the music again, Ellen grabs Sam and pulls him into the kitchen -- they have five minutes before they'll be missed.
35 - Sarcasm
She's never heard a voice more perfectly suited to sly sarcasm, and there's nothing more she hates than when that sarcasm is directed at her.
36 - Sordid
No matter how hard she tries, she can't imagine this as something sordid -- every time Sam touches her, it's something new.
37 - Soliloquy
She never went to college, isn't much for books, but she never really feels that divide between then until she hears Sam reenacting perfect Shakespeare to cheer up a sick Jo.
38 - Sojourn
It's always temporary... no matter how long Sam stays, she always knows he'll be leaving with Dean, and she can't bring herself to resent that leaving.
39 - Share
Dean doesn't share, and Ellen doesn't expect him to; but she sure as hell wasn't expecting him to corner her at the Roadhouse one day and tell her that she was taking Sam's mind off the Hunt.
40 - Solitary
She's terrified that she's falling in love and she knows she has to make it stop -- one day Sam'll die and she'll be alone again, and the first time she lost love it almost killed her.
41 - Nowhere
There's nowhere he can go to escape the demons of his past, but that doesn't mean Ellen thinks he should stop running.
42 - Neutral
Mike and Terry are in the back playing poker, and Ellen warns Sam against entering the game -- he can lie with the best of them, but his poker face when playing actual poker really sucks.
43 - Nuance
Running a saloon makes her watch everyone for trouble, try and spot the danger before it comes, but even with all the nuances in Sam's manner, she can't ever tell what he'll do next.
44 - Near
She can't help but worry she's using him, every time he gets near her, when he touches her with those calloused, gentle hands.
45 - Natural
Dean's drunk as hell, mumbling about the 'naturally dead'... Sam and the Impala are nowhere to be found, and all Ellen can do is take Dean out to the couch in back and spend five hours on the phone, trying to track Sam down to come get his stupid brother.
46 - Horizon
She's awake and waiting outside when the Impala appears on the horizon, headlights soft in the dying dark -- Sam won't look at her and she can't open her mouth to ask what he was doing and who he was doing it with.
47 - Valiant
She hasn't spoken to him in a month, and it hurts her every single day, but she won't be the first to make the call... someone else makes the decision, and she finds herself listening, incredulous, as Dean tells her over the phone in no uncertain terms that Sam's a dork, but a valiant one, and can she please just call him so Dean can escape the soap opera Sam insists on living?
`
48 - Virtuous
It's another month before he admits what happened -- Sam thought he could go after the succubus alone but he messed up and, well, the succubus did what succubae do, and now he can't bring himself to touch her with what he thinks are sullied hands... she pushes down the urge to tell him why he's wrong, and instead holds his hand and kisses his temple and tells him that he's never going to be anything but unsullied to her.
49 - Victory
It's a victory, small but real, when everyone important in her life, Sam and Jo and yes, even Dean, are together in one place and for once, no one's fighting.
50 - Defeat
They can't ever really hope to defeat the evil, only push it back for another generation... some days, that break in the battle is enough.
