M's Office, Thursday

Jan 04, 2007 09:13

The office was decent enough, M discovered, although not quite the digs she was used to. Still, it had a window, and enough space to move around the desk that she didn't cramped. Maybe even by the end of the term, it would feel like it belonged to her ( Read more... )

Marty shows up at the door with an opened envelope and a scowl on his face.

"What's this all about?" he asked tossing the file on the desk.

M gave Marty a stern look, and sat silently for a long moment, not touching the file. Once she felt he might be adequately aware of her displeasure at his entrance, she inclined her head toward a chair.

"Have a seat, Mr Blank. I understand you've enrolled in my class. I'd like you to tell me why."

Marty crossed his arms and refused to take a seat. Judging from his posture, he really doesn't care about M's displeasure.

"I have a thing for women who resemble Bea Arthur."

"Obviously you know something about my background," Marty grumbled. "And if you know anything else you should know I'm not in that business any more. Just thought I'd go for a class with a topic I'm familiar with and maybe get up to date."

"It wouldn't matter to me if you were still in the business, Mr Blank."

M left the envelope where Marty had tossed it, and instead opened a file that was sitting in front of her. "I called you in because I find your background of interest. And I agree, you seem well suited for this class. Your record, both here at this school and in your previous assignments, is far from exemplary. But then...we don't really look for exemplary students in our line of work, do we?"

"And to reiterate, I'm not in that line of work any more," Marty replied. "And any interest in the topic is strictly academic. So again I ask you, what's with the cloak and dagger routine?"

"I wanted to see how you responded," M replied, looking up from her file and fixing Marty with an even gaze. "And I thought it might get your attention. So, Mr Blank, would you be interested in a position as my assistant?"

"You've got a funny way of interviewing someone for the position," Marty grunted. "I'll do it on one condition. Wherever or whatever source you found this information from? Lose it entirely."

"Mr Blank, I have an entire intelligence agency at my disposal. It would be very difficult for me to 'lose it'. You can, however, be assured of my discretion. I have as much interest in exposing the private lives of my students as I have in exposing those of my agents," she answered crisply.

"Now, since you're working for me, we'll lay out a few ground rules. First, if I ever find out you've broken into my office and gone through my files, detention will the least of your worries. Second, I expect my instructions to be carried out regardless of your personal views on them. And third, if you ever get into any sort of trouble..."

She set a cell phone on the desk in front of Marty. "You'll call me. I take care of my people, Mr Blank, so long as you do your job."

"You'll have to forgive me 'M', but before I become one of your 'people', I think you might want to tell more about who you are," Marty replied. "I've had a couple of people show up and wreak some havoc in my life already since I've been to this school. I just like to make sure you're not one of them."

"Good for you," M conceded, liking the fact that Marty wasn't ready to just start blindly trusting people who offered him a job and cell phone.

"You can call me M. I'm with the British government, although I'm currently on sabbatical. A teaching position was offered, and I decided to take it."

"Can I think this over and get back to you? You'll have my word by morning," Marty replied.

That got Marty a raised brow, but M figured a day couldn't hurt. It wasn't as though she was offering him a job at MI6, after all. And people in their profession were a suspicious lot.

"I expect to have either your acceptance or refusal first thing in the morning," she agreed.

"You'll know either way," Marty replied. "Anything else?"

"Not at the moment, Mr Blank," M replied, with a nod. "Thank you."
