The link doesn't seem to want to work : (

And this debate has confused me. I don't know why the government is getting all worried and wanting to legislate to ban same-sex marriage.
Same-sex marriage isn't legal in Australia anyway. I don't know why they're going to all this effort to stop people doing something they can't do anyway.

Because the issue at hand isn't the legality. It's the Message. A specific ban also means there can be no 'easy' path of future for same-sex marriages to be recognised.
It's also the suggestion that true unions can only exist and therefore be reconisable between a man and a woman. I, for one, am against the implication that a relationship between two parties of the same gender is invalid and doesn't deserve respect.

I completely agree with you. You know my feelings about the subject.
I was actually questioning the *governments* reasoning in bringing this matter up and drawing attention to it, *not* ours in opposing it. I am vehemently against the enshrining of anti-gay sentiment into legislation in any form.
As it is, having studied this area in some depth a couple of years ago, I can say that as it stands there is no 'easy' path to same-sex marriage in Australia at the moment. No court is going to recognise a marriage between two people of the same sex as valid (with some interesting exceptions and loopholes). It's already against the legislation we have. Unfortunately, it will require some brave government to actually pass laws to allow this to occur.
I truly hope that this happens in the near future. At least we have legislation that recognises de facto relationships without being gender specific. It's a start.

Well that was kinda my point - except maybe I meandered a bit - we have to rally against the message they're trying to send with our own.
