If Bush and Howard can float their campaigns on the back of the terror campaign.. why can't Sony and Miramax etc jump onboard too....

Yes its very true. Orgianised crime, not the mentioned "terror groups", do gain lucrative profit from unlicenced reproductions of copyrighted digital content. And by handing your money over for a cheap rip of a film/game/tv series/etc you are giving funds to orgianisations who enforce their business operations through calculated violence, murder, and intimidation of others - orgianisations that operate way beyond the guidelines of a fair and legal trading framework - often aided by a network of institutional corruption ( ... )

I'm in no way suggesting that piracy or theft of any sort is vindicated - but the article in its own right profers the vaguest hints of "journalism" in the quest for a sensationalistic claim. That's what I'm disappointed in. I don't think nor suggest that the organisations that profit from piracy etc are "good" but it seems like the latest "cast blame on terrorists" is yet another way to delegitimise a real issue by making it another campaign tool. Do I make sense? They effectively trivialise the true implications of a situation by failing to genuinely consider it. It's become a new tag line.

Oh I totally agree with you. I was just in an "editorial rant" frame of mind. Once I start writing I get carried away on all kinds of tangents.

Oh and btw *bounce*

The article actually seems to raise a very valid point, but does itself no favours by swathing itself in post-9/11 hyperbole and running a little too far with the idea. Yes, there is a chance that each pirate copy you buy of this, that or the other may be financing a terrorist cell, but then again there is a chance that any legitimate service you purchase could well be helping a businessman with fanatical views donate a little bit more money to a questionable organisation (or even the taxes you pay help pay for the aid to Papua New Guinea that is used to buy Black Hawk helicopters, which are in turn used to slaughter 'rebel' villagers in Bouganville.)

That said, however, once you get passed the emotive exaggeration, the distribution companies have a valid (if ludicrously over-hyped) point. Pirating of software, movies, music etc is illegal...

I think you said it better than me. The use of the emotional triggers make the actualities disappear under the cloud.
