Division of labor:
Right now, I have two computers. Below they are listed below with their current tasks, as well as the amount of computing power the task takes (1-3 *s)
Galactica (Server)
-torrenting *
-media storage *
-backup storage *
-long-term software dev/testing **
Boomer (iBook)
-schoolwork *
-warez wrangling **
-audio and video editing ***
-short-term software dev/testing **
-graphic design ***
-tri-OS solution/software testing***
In terms of computers and available applications, Boomer is really only a ** machine, and it's doing too many *** things in the course of a day. It just doesn't feel professional.
Therefore, I propose a third machine: Basically all Macs are being considered besides the Mac(book) Pro - that leaves iMac, Macbook, and Mac mini. Unfortunately a lot of the stuff (esp audio work and solution testing) have to happen at school, so Macbook really is the only acceptable option. BUT I don't want to move all tasks to the Macbook, so on some days I'd just carry two computers to school. Here is the proposed usage matrix:
Galactica same as before
Boomer (iBook)
-school work *
-LAMP dev/testing *
-graphic design (until CS3) ***
Macbook
-audio and video editing ***
-Java/C/C++ dev/testing **
-tri-OS solution/software testing***
-warez wrangling**
It feels so stupid to replace a machine I got in October. I wouldn't be replacing it, though... just supplementing it.
