Not Clever Enough

Feb 06, 2007 12:57

I’ve been thinking over the past few days (a dangerous proposition, is the standard quip) and I’ve realized what my greatest fear is. It’s actually been a fear of mine for some time but now, I think it’s actually begun to be realized ( Read more... )

Hmmmm....I am trying to think of a deep intellectual topic. Will let you know when I do.

I am defninitely in a mental rut as well. Too much internet does that. It also affected me at work last semester. I have started two philospophy books and should really finish them.

I'm hoping Operation Read or Die Revival will spark some sort of thinking on my part. Otherwise, I picked up a copy of "The Selfish Gene" which I'll hopefully read soon.

Hmmmm. Didn't you or someone here do something on the science of ROD at one point? That would make either a good discussion or possibly a good ROD wiki article.

I wish I was better versed in philosophy than I am, because certain things in ROD (cloning, false (?) memories) raise very interesting questions about consciousness and identity.

One of the philosophical messages, by the way, seems to be that it is better to be unhappy and free than to be happy (however that is defined) and without free will. Also, note that the Sisters choose their happy 'false' memories and elect to define themselves as sisters no matter what version of the truth the BL tries to sell them on. Love (like God in some theology) is something that has to be freely chosen in ROD.

Finally, I am interested in doing something on the contentious topic of love and maybe sex in ROD. Again, a wiki article or a discussion?

Yeah, I wrote a post on the community about the science in early 2005. I did Deep's but I don't think I finished talking about it. I guess I should either post that on the Wiki or on ReadorDie.us (which I promise to update at some point).

The Philosophy and the Love/Sex idea's would both work as discussions and then, once they are fleshed out more, then getting posted on the Wiki (or conversely, posting it at the same as the discussion and then just updating it as the discussion gets fleshed out).

I'm not sure if it would be better to do them now or wait until later in the Revival but as it is your product, I would not want to set constraints on it.

But I do want to say that I want to try to have a discussion on the cloning as soon as the official viewing date for the OVA has passed (February 18th).

I have that same fear myself, honestly.

I think you are quite clever indeed!

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.

I hope you are able to work at your school's bio lab or maybe find a way to get into one of the teaching-type positions at the museum, like other Kate and I (among others) as that would probably resolve any of those fears in yourself.

You're welcome!

And I'm actually putting in an application to be a lab assistant at my school, so yay!

Yay for Dickens. Have you read Nicholas Nickelby?

I actually haven't read much Dawkins (I read two short essays he wrote a few years ago and that's it by him) so I really can't comment on the subject of his writings, only the depth that is normally associated with him. I picked up on of his early books, back when he wrote on evolutionary biology and not just badmouthing religion. If I like that, then I'll possibly read his book "The God Delusion," just to see what his argument is (and to be fair, I did read "Left Behind" so please don't think my reading the books or wanting to read it is tacit approval of the books message).

As for Dickens, I've read "Great Expectations" (which I liked) and "A Tale of Two Cities," (which I didn't like). I definitely need to read more Dickens and I'll give "Nicholas Nickelby" a try if you think that's a good one.

Try "Pickwick Papers" for laughs. "David Copperfield" has some fine things, and both it and "Great Expectations" are more realistic and emotionally intense than one might expect. "Hard Times" is shorter and tighter than most of his other things, which is good.

That's cool, I don't judge what you agree with by what you read. I just dislike Dawkins' attitude towards religion, as though it's the most ignorant of stupidities or the most disgusting of plagues. : (

But anyway, you SHOULD read more Dickens ^^ Nicholas Nickelby is one of the comedic ones. It is indeed funny. Then of course there's The Pickwick Papers, which is also very amusing. Hmm... it's been a while I can't remember which other ones I liked a lot.
