I alway start off straight drawing something on photoshop that's complete crap, and then I do a bunch of Photoshop things on it and make it way better. I usually don't save my past steps like this, so I thought I'd share. It makes me laugh...
This is what I began with. Looks like something a four year old would do, but for me it's actually a pretty decent drawing (it's supposed to be a bird)...
This is what I ended up with...
Still looks like a four year old's painting, but a four year old with promise! I just find it funny how much I was able to do without using the paint tool after the original picture. It's all just gradients, smudges, and other things. Like for example the sun I just cut out the picture in a half circular shape, then made the background a sunny color, then added a gradient and blended. To me that's simple, but if you asked me to draw a circle and color it in (which a kid could do), I'd give you a sickly orange oval.
It seems like the less I draw before photoshopping the better, cause my drawing skills suck and just gets in the way of my much better/cheating way. Now if I could just actually draw, I'd be set.
