Was Dean's role diminished in Supernatural?

I am an avid hater of Dean vs. Sam debates but posted this on a website in response to a discussion.  The discussion was for people to vent their frustrations with Dean's character development.  Quite frankly, I don't have any and I don't understand anyone's incessant need to bitch and moan about a show they profess to love.   Anyway, here's what I ( Read more... )

You have stated what I also believe--neither one is a hero without the other, and Sam chose as opposed to Dean giving up, but Sam would not have succeded without Dean's presence.

I too have a hard time understanding why there is a
Samgirl/Deangirl division.

Did you get any positive feedback from your post on the original site you referred to?

Yes, most of the feedback has been very positive so far. This particular site doesn't stand much for insults to others opinions and such, which is why I like it so much. You can state your opinion and even if it differs from someone else's there are usually no ugly comments. A couple of people have posted things that I don't agree with at all but I've said my piece, so I'm good. :) Nothing they say can change how I feel.

For someone professing to be feeling cranky this was a well reasoned, rational argument! :D
I do think that the writers did something different in this ending that perhaps Kripke had planned, and sure, there were some loose ends probably as a result - like Jesse, for instance. So who knows if this ending was the one they had planned for either brother? Maybe they were supposed to fight it out in the Angel meat-suits and then both assert themselves like Sam did. Or maybe they were both meant to end up in Lucifer's cage instead of Sam and Adam.
I don't think it really matters because Swan Song was so bloody good, it worked.
And it still gave us an ending that was consistent with the character of both brothers as they have developed over the last 5 seasons...

Just because I'm cranky doesn't mean I can't think straight, AMB. :) And trust me, I am very cranky. I'm sure some things were changed since there is going to be a season six but I would like to believe Kripke didn't compromise his story for anyone....at least not the point of the story, which to me has always been the importance of family. For me, that point came across loud and clear.

I had a go at the gym manager this morning with a full crank on - he said he would come back and talk to me about their new "improved" stretching area later but surprise, surprise, he never did - big coward!

I completely agree with your statement and I think it was beautifully said. :)

Like you said, Sam couldn't have made his sacrifice if Dean hadn't gone to the cemetery. Dean was ready to die in that moment. All that mattered was that Sam wasn't trapped in Lucifer's body alone. Dean was there, trying to help him break free. And all of that after he backed Sam's decision to say yes to the devil in the first place. That was huge, because it required him to back off from his big brother roll, something he's been struggling with all season long. But Dean was still Dean and even in that final moment just before Sam said yes, he pleaded with Sam.

I'm rambling here, but it all came down to the 2 brothers together and the bond between them that saved the world, not just one alone. I can't believe some people would think that Dean didn't have a part to play in all that and that he had no character development. I mean...what show have they been watching???

Thanks! And yes, I said the same thing last night when I was reading some more comments about what show were they watching. They definitely saw something different than I did. It makes me sad ( ... )
