Learning to stop overediting.....

Sep 13, 2013 09:17

Is part of writing learning to LET IT GO? Is it just letting yourself write freely without inhibitions and without worrying if you are using the same word too many times? Not so much sacrificing quality for quantity, but just reining in your over-editing self and just posting what you wrote? Let me know what you think. (xposted to Facebook)

I read stuff several times during the writing process, mostly because if I've stopped somewhere in a fic I've got to read from the beginning to get the feel for where I was going again. I make lots of little tweaks along the way but once I've reached the end of a fic or the chapter I'm working on, I read it all the way through again just one more time and then post it.

Sometimes I miss typos but usually it's something small that I can fix quickly. So yeah, at some point you've gotta say 'goodbye' and move on. Posting the stuff is what builds confidence in writing and allowing yourself to make mistakes is what helps you learn. :)

Tweaking here and there is ok, and yes, I guess trying not to use the same word too many times should be good, but there's only so much you can tweak without basically changing the whole thing. I'd say you should proofread and change stuff when it sounds weird to you, then let it rest for a while and read it one more time and then post.
